Library leaders step up

The City of Cape Town’s Library and Information Services (LIS) welcomed 21 new emerging library leaders. Their graduation took place on South African Librarians Day, 10 July.
The 21 librarians completed the Strengthening Innovative Library Leaders (SILL) training programme.
The programme was created by the Mortenson Center for International Programs at the University of Illinois Library, with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
It was adapted by LIS to include local needs.
This was the third academy aimed at enhancing the participants' understanding and confidence in their own leadership styles.
The librarians who completed the training are:

- Lucinda Jansen from Heideveld Library

- Nomthandazo Zandile Joja from Crossroads Library

- Vuyokazi Princess Sibutha from Avondale Library
'Congratulations to our librarians who are stepping up to build capacity, drive change and innovation and develop their leadership skills. This is another feather in their caps which benefits the communities they service. I am proud of our librarians who have proven their leadership capabilities,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.
At the ceremony, the librarians also confirmed the public librarian's pledge during which they affirmed that they would honour the code of ethics of being a professional librarian and to give their best to build people and communities.
